September 2026 Update

Monthly Thoughts

Late posting, so none this month. Next month!

‘Number goes up’ continues. The last couple of months all new investments were either in bonds or gold. This month it was back to the global tracker, but along with good equity performance and crypto holding up, I’m already in need of some cash/bond uplift.
Something that I look at every month as I compile these numbers is a position in an ISA account where I purchased Vanguard LifeStrategy 20 in late 2021. For those not familiar, this is a 20% equity, 80% bond fund that I’m using as a lazy way to get access to bonds. It just so happens that I didn’t contribute any more to this account/position since then, so it’s easy to keep track of its performance at a glance with no need for fancy IRR calculations in spreadsheets. The other reason its easy is because its £ value is as near as makes no difference, the exact same now as when I purchased it. I’ve read various articles on bonds recently (they’ve been in the news for the current battering they’re taking), but the authors often point out that the point of holiding them is because they don’t do what equities do and then remind the reader that there is indeed a point to them. I thank these authors because I need this reminder as I sit watching this particular position do precisely nothing for 5 years.
